I read this statement yesterday which is posted on the U.S Department of State website. I had a good laugh out of this because during a recent trip to Costa Rica (and the first time I had ever been there or ANYWHERE outside the U.S.) I got to experience the local driving skills firsthand. Let me tell you this statement doesn't do it justice!Costa Rica has one of the highest vehicle accident rates in the world. The fatality rate for pedestrians and those riding bicycles and motorcycles is very high.
The traffic laws and speed limits are often ignored, and turns across one or two lanes of traffic are common. It is also common to see vehicles passing each other on dangerous stretches of highway, and pedestrians are not given the right of way.
Believe every word they say, it is nowhere NEAR an exaggeration!
