How do I get a renewed passport while in Costa Rica

My passport is due to expire within the month. I am only 5 days into my 90 day visit limit but I need to get a new passport. How do I accomplish this?

You are smarter than most... as you can get your passport renewed faster and cheaper in Costa Rica than the USA.

Just go the US Embassy in San Jose, present your current passport, the application form and payment. You should get your new passport in about a week (without paying extra for expedited service).

It's the same process if you lose to have your passport stolen, but then you'll have to prove your identity first.

When you pick up your new passport they will cancel your old one.
