'Which is Better? Costa Rica or the USA? See the Difference'

You know what happens when you move to a place where the customs are all different than what you are used to? It becomes natural and fitting (at least MOST things)

Here are some things that are different here in Costa Rica than In the United States. Some are "good" differences and some are just plain odd. See if you can think of more to add...

• When you are in line at the bank if you are pregnant, old, have an infant, are handicapped or last but not least, CRAZY, you get to go to the front of the line!

• Everyone kisses hello AND goodbye and the cheek

• People, for the most part, do not have hot water heaters in their homes or restaurants

There are like a million thing sthat I can think of that was very strange when I first came here. See what you can add to the list..

I would like to correct you: MOST of the people have a water hearter at home, at the restaurants is not that necessary. We live in a Tropical country... damn, is hot in here most of the time...

I lived in Costa Rica for many years and with respect to hot water experienced the following:

It was very rare to find a place that used hot water tanks. That seemed reserved for the most expensive houses. Many had "suicide showers" that is a shower head with an electric heater in it.

You would get hot want for as long as you wanted, but the trick was to have just enough water flowing for it to click on. If you turned it on too much you would get a cold shower as it couldn't keep up.

They were named suicide showers because the wires ran out to the shower head sometimes with an open knife switch in the shower!!

Rarely was there hot want in the faucets in the bathrooms or kitchen. A few places had inline heaters hidden in the wall or cabinets.

The other big problem was the plumbing of the toilets which often don't allow the paper to go down, hence the little waste basket next to the toilet!
