Costa Rica Dentists and Dentistry

By Bill at 06/25/07 09:21
I've been to the dentist a few times in Costa Rica and it's nothing special. Quite a bit cheaper than in the USA.

I've always gone to local dentist, not one that is marketing in the USA. I think you get the best bang for the buck that way. You'll probably find that a little English is spoken in many of those offices.

Guanacaste Resorts Properties

Your name?

Max Rodriguez

Your Location (city, etc)

Flamingo Beach

When the site was started?

It was started some three months ago to promote investments in the area

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

In this site, single family homes as well as Condominiums in a gated community are shown. Most of the properties are so close to the construction site of a new, state of the art Marina in Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica, a well known sport fishing destination for anglers from around the world .

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

gathering the pictures.

What has been the easiest part of operating your website?

Uploading the pages.

What was your biggest mistake?

misspelling the e-mail address in the mailto: field.

Who maintains your website and why?

I maintain it myself cause I'm a Systems Engineer.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

A web site is like carrying a brochure wherever you go, or call or write to. You can show pictures to someone thousand of miles away and you know: A picture is worth a thousand words.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

Integrating e-commerce, bluetooth, WiFi to cellular phones is the future of Internet. Desktops PC's and in some extend, laptops are doomed to disappear.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Is a legal way to force otherwise expensive methods of finding something , that should be free in the first place.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

My personal experience is that it helped, but being put to the bottom of a list is bad by any means.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Forcing organic searches was very successful to a point, followed by listings and link exchange

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

I haven't tried PPC yet but I have a felling it is not a clever way of doing business. I just don't click for anyone sponsoring unless is a famous brand.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

New code that run faster on browsers, and integrated video easy to setup.

Why am I answering this questions anyway?

I hope this is posted soon and someone come to my country and buy one of these properties that will double its price in a year and make three people happy: The reseller, the Realtor and myself .

VOIP Blocked; Who do you Call?

By Bill at 06/17/07 19:27
VOIP... voice over IP the future of the telephone. Anyone that makes long distance phone calls in the USA is an idiot if they don't take advantage of this technology. Even the phone companies are realizing that the future is in VOIP.

VOIP is simply using the internet to carry your conversation... without a computer. Plug your VOIP adapter into your router and a regular telephone into it and your phone works anywhere you have internet. The phone number follows you.

Normally you don't pay any per minute fee to call anywhere in the USA regardless of where your telephone actually is. Some services offer the calls for a penny or two a minute without a monthly service charge.

If you are living in Costa Rica a VOIP phone is a great way to keep in touch back home (and those back home can also call you without incurring international calling rates).

Now one of those negatives you might encounter living in Costa Rica is that the phone company is a government owned and operated monopoloy and from that prespective VOIP is a very bad idea. It goes against the power and money of regular phone service.

Rather than getting on board and encouraging the development of VOIP (a boon for high tech companies wanting to locate in Costa Rica) I found that my service was blocked. The VOIP service simply wouldn't give me a dial tone and tech support for the VOIP company said the packets were arriving altered.

One of the routers in Costa Rica was changing the VOIP packets so they wouldn't synchronize with the service effectively stopping the service from working. I was able to use a VPN to encrpt the packets and place my calls though with a lower quality.

Whether this is an ongoing project blocking VOIP calls or just some experimintation I have no idea. One of the disadavantages of VOIP is most services use a standard protocol that can be easily messed with or intercepted. Both the audio and especially the dialing information can be recorded.

Relocate to Costa Rica Negatives

By Bill at 06/17/07 19:15
There are really too many negatives to cover in one article and they will vary depending on you!

Most importantly, you have to realize that Costa Rica is NOT the United States. It is a completely different culture and you are an outsider. Not only that you are an outsider with money. Even if you consider yourself poor, in the Costa Rican's eyes, you are rich!

The weather is beautiful, the beaches are beautiful, the mountain views are bueatiful, the rain forests are beautiful, the sunsets are beautiful. The people seem bueatiful. You will fall in love with the country when you step off the airplane.

In a year or two though all those beautiful things will be contrasted with the daily grind. The United States has a long history of being an industrialized nation bent on quality and efficiency. Costa Rica lacks that history.

You will find that things are not often done in a quality manner or with efficency. Look at how many skyscrapers are in Costa Rica. Maybe you can count them on one finger. Compare that to Panama. It is not a question of being a third world country or earthquakes.

That is simply a lack of structure that would allow such a project in Costa Rica. That lack of structure is what will eat you alive (not the insects). A lack of efficency and quality may not be an issue when you visit on a vacation or for the first months of your living in Costa Rica.

When you can't relax because life has become not slow, but convoluted and inefficent you'll understand

Will My Laptop Work in Costa Rica

By Bill at 06/17/07 19:08
You laptop will work just like at home, in Costa Rica. The electricity is the same, 110 volt with the same outlets.

You might find a cybercafe that lets you plug into their network and an occassional hotel or bed and breakfast might have wifi. You might pack a (cheap) wifi router or two and donate them to any bed and breakfasts that you stay at which are in need!

The SJO airport has free wifi though you need to register first and finding a plug might be difficult.

Make sure your insurance covers loss, damage or theft in a foreign country before you leave.

Cellular Communication in Costa Rica

By Bill at 06/17/07 09:59
The first problem with cellular phone service in Costa Rica is that it is government owned an operated. The second problem it is a monopoly. That's not the end of it either.

You can't get a phone in your name unless you are a resident (and only some residents). You might have to wait 6 months or more to get a line (but many stores will happily sell you a phone). If you are not a resident or a suitable resident you will need to get a phone in someone else's name or a corporate.

If you get it in a corporation that means going to a lawyer everytime there is a problem and you need something from the "phone company". For example if someone else reports your phone stolen, you can't have it turned back on without the help of an attorney!

You might buy a phone from a private citizen who sells you the line with it. They can report it stolen and sell another phone and their line to another sucker.

On the bright side you might be able to get a half decent internet connection via your cell in Costa Rica. It used to be free, but people would charge you around US$700 to set you up!
