It is important to know that you must have a valid passport that expires no less than thirty days from the date of your arrival in Costa Rica. You can only stay up to 90 days without an extension. If you overstay your ninety days you may experience a delay at the airport and they may not let you enter Costa Rica again. There is also a departure tax for short term visitors to Costa Rica, so don't spend all of your money on kewl mementos or you won't have enough money to get out of the country! I read this statement yesterday which is posted on the U.S Department of State website. I had a good laugh out of this because during a recent trip to Costa Rica (and the first time I had ever been there or ANYWHERE outside the U.S.) I got to experience the local driving skills firsthand. Let me tell you this statement doesn't do it justice!Costa Rica has one of the highest vehicle accident rates in the world. The fatality rate for pedestrians and those riding bicycles and motorcycles is very high. I have heard that the central park is not a very good place to visit at night. Is this a true statement, or is it just the locals trying to keep us away from a good hangout? Tags: central park • alajuela • 1 Comments. - Permalink |

I was wondering what the status of owning a gun is like in Costa Rica. On my first trip there, to Alajuela in particular, I was struck by the gates and apparent security in the area. Even people's cars were INSIDE the tall gates. I saw lots of barbed and razor wire. Being from a neighborhood in America where we don't even lock our doors, this was beyond me.Are you allowed to carry a concealed weapon? Would you have any big legal problems if you shoot or otherwise kill a burgler in your house and ask questions later? Tags: costa rica • guns • home protection • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

I visited the City of Alajuela in Costa Rica last year. I was amazed that it was such a beautiful place but I do have one comment about the air quality. When I went downtown, it seemed so polluted from bus and other diesel fumes you could barely breathe. Between that and the smell from the open air meat markets...man oh man. Are there any air pollution laws there? Tags: alajuela • air quality • 3 Comments. - Permalink |

I am considering moving to Alajuela, Costa Rica. Can someone give me good advice in regard to a general idea of the housing market? I am looking for an apartment or small house for myself and two children. Is there an area that is better for schools or travelling around town? What is the average cost of housing?
